One bit of work is to measuring the response of the vestibula or balance system to electrical stimulation. The long term goal is to develop a vestibular implant to allow wheelchair bound people the chance to stand and walk again.

This will involve the use of miniature gyroscopes and sending electrical signals to the balance nerve to allow the patient to regain their sense of balance. For example people who temporary loose their balance due to an infection – laberynthitis can be bed bound until the infection clears.

We’re developing whole bones that we can use to test how injuries develop, and that we plan to develop so that they can be used to replace damaged bone in the future – see my profile for more information.
