There are normally 1 to 2 surgeries a week. But this week its been a little manic, where the 3 surgeons managed to implant 2 on Monday and 5 on Wednesday. The department implant around 150-200 patients a year. Excluding the surgeries i would normally see around 6-10 patients a week. Some come infor routine checks, which are relatively easy. The most work will be switching the implant on for the first time, and letting the patients acclimatise to the new sound over a period of weeks or months. For babies where the implants are inserted at the age of 1 – 2 years old. It may be 6 months – 1 year before the children speak there first words.
