There are four main engineering disciplines:
Electrical/Electronic
Mechanical
Civil
Chemicalunder each category there are many sub disciplines. Decide on which one you are interested in, and ususally need to have a good grasp of maths

Find out more about whatever type of engineering you’re interested in. See if there are any companies who will offer you work experience or allow you to shadow one of their staff for a day. Go to exhibitions at museums, read articles online, read books on that area of engineering. When considering degree courses visit the different universities and departments.
When we speak to potential students on open days we are looking for people who are interested in the subject and who have done some research, outside of their A-level subjects. We look at ability to solve problems as well, but we mainly want enthusiastic and engaged people with an obvious interest and passion in the subject.
One big advantage of engineering is that if you think you’re not doing the type of engineering you really want to do it is easy to change to a different type of engineering after or even during your degree.

Remember to look at the courses available at different universities. We live in an exciting age where there are more engineering disciplines than before and courses can differ slightly between universities so you want to see which one you like the best.
I think you should always try and choose something you enjoy – but don’t be discouraged if sometimes it’s difficult or you don’t enjoy it all the time since it’s quite rare to find something that’s easy and always enjoyable 100% of the time.
Talk to people and try to get some work experience too!
